This project has recevied national and international recognition through publication on multiple digital and print media June 2024 Spiritual hub in India provides a source of wisdom and inspiration, By Ar Apurva Bose Dutta RIBA See article ( Digital , Print Publication ) The Sri Aurobindo Integral Learning Centre (SAILC) in Surat dedicated to Sri Aurobindo – his vision and thought – aspires to be a global hub for the youth to study and research on his philosophy and work. The building invites one on a journey of discovery with its beguiling simplicity and layered experience. The built form surrounded by 2300sq.m of carefully designed ‘natural’ water bodies is ideated to give its users a sensorially rich spatial experience. The interplay between indoors and outdoors is pivotal in the design of SAILC. The landscape interweaving the built form in the form of courtyards, harvesting lakes, planted trees, green roofs and bio-ponds help create a surreal world within. The simple material palette of the building consists of exposed load bearing brickwork and RCC roof, with kota stone flooring. Most of the spaces inside the building are naturally ventilated making use of passive solar techniques and bioclimatic design strategies for thermal comfort and cooling. BACK TO PROJECTS

KALPANA APARTMENTS (unbuilt) 2012 PROJECT INFORMATION Location: Residential Zone, Sector 1 Site Area (without Community Centre & Phase 2): 12000 m² Footprint Area : 2260 m² Built up Area (parking excluded): 4880 m² Total no. of Apartments: 50 Expected Inhabitants: 110- 130 F.S.I.: 0.4 The design of this Apartments and Community Centre was commissioned to Studio Naqshbandi around August 2011. It was to be located in sector 1 of the Residential Zone of Auroville which has a relatively low density development. It was to house about 130-140 persons in 52 apartments of varied sizes, ranging from studio space to three bedroom apartments for families. A swimming pool, some offices, a Gym, laundry, home theatre, open air amphitheatre, sports area for badminton, table tennis, guest rooms for friends of Kalpana residents, common space for meetings / exhibition, covered parking, a Restaurant etc. were planned around the community centre with a common plaza and was an integral part of the project. The concept of Kalpana Apartments evolved around a lively Internal street which will be fully pedestrian and landscaped. This was an important starting point, since one of the major challenges one faces in designing residential apartments in Auroville, where most buildings are naturally ventilated , is the aspect of a very minimal ambient sound level , thereby making it difficult to have normal conversations in the privacy of homes. Added to this is the multi-cultural aspect, where each culture’s threshold of acceptance of noise can vary greatly. Creating thus an internal street which allows for many activities to take place would add to the ambient noise giving the residents more privacy . In Kalpana we had consciously chosen to create a layout which is flexible based on a modular system. This would make each person feel that their apartment is slightly different from others giving them a sense of identity. The end effect was an organic form which allows for porosity and multiplicity of choices and interactions . BACK TO PROJECTS

Timeline: Design Beginning: June 2011 | Start of Construction: Feb 2014 | Inauguration: Aug 2015 KEY Features: Simplicity I cost effectiveness with local craftsmanship I light and stillness PROJECT DESCRIPTION Budokan Martial Art Dojo located in Dehashakti sports complex, was commissioned by Sri Aurobindo Institute for Integral Education and Research (SAIIER). The Dojo is designed for all kinds of Martial arts, primary one being Aikido, for adults and children classes . The architecture, interior and landscape design of the project was undertaken by the studio.The design of furniture for the changing rooms, reception and specialized needs like the weapon’s rack, shinden frames, sliding doors and window grills were also executed. DESIGN CONCEPT The design evolved from the number and size of tatamis required and the specific etiquette followed for an aikido dojo. The design is based on the climate, context and financial constraints . The Dojo reflects Japanese simplicity and inclusiveness creating a subtle dialogue between the inside and outside. Daylighting was an integral part of the design. Diffused lighting provided by folded RCC slab with hot air extraction at roof level. The Dojo is raised above the ground by 70 cms to avoid termites and other insects. B Designed to let indirect diffused light through folded RCC slab All the labour for the project came from the surrounding villages. Choice of materials was kept sparse and rustic – exposed brick and concrete, rough cuddapah stone for ancillary areas and eco-friendly bamboo flooring for walkway around tatamis. SLI 2015 PROJECT INFORMATION Livelihoods of people in rural India have been under severe stress over the last decade due to the effects of globalization. Locally-made products compete with imported products, locally-grown food competes with mass-produced food, and human labor competes with machines. These changes have resulted in natural resources being neglected and overexploited, concentration of human resources toward mass production as cheap labour, and rural communities losing their traditional bonds maintained by localized economies. All of this has contributed to an overall degeneration of quality of life. The National Rural Livelihood Mission was set up by the Government of India to address these issues by supporting rural livelihoods, under which each state has its own State Rural Livelihood Mission. These bodies design and implement locally relevant livelihood-enhancing and -supporting schemes through community organizations. The programmes have been successful in some ways but are ultimately unsustainable in that these local enterprises end up dependent on the larger markets. They also often lack an integral perspective of livelihood in terms of health, ecology and longevity. The state government recognizes this as a huge challenge. To this end, in 2014, the Tamilnadu State Rural Livelihood Mission took steps to launch a Sustainable Livelihood Institute (SLI) that would equip State Government functionaries as well as rural communities to think and work from a sustainable paradigm. It invited Auroville to be its partner in this venture . Thus SLI was to be developed and managed as a joint project by the state Rural Livelihood Mission and Auroville. The state government requested that Auroville design and deliver regular programmes and agreed to fund the creation of a physical facility to house SLI. From this facility participants would use wider Auroville as a campus. The design of the insitute should showcase the best of Auroville architecture, design, technologies, and conservation practices. A consortium of three architecture firms from Auroville under the working name of Architects Collaborative was formed and followed a process of Dreamweaving – a process evolved in Auroville - which consciously aims for the Highest Common Factor rather than the Lowest Common Denominator in a team work. The Master Plan of SLI on the designated site near Irumbai Lake was thus finalised in a harmonious and collaborative manner, after which the project didnot go further in its physical manifestation. However SLI continued to conduct field workshops within Auroville and its bio region till 2019, delivering some important milestones in the realisation of the aims set up TNRLM. BACK TO PROJECTS

COTTAGE RESTAURANT 2009 PROJECT INFORMATION Client: Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust Year: 2006–2009 Location: Pondicherry Site Area: 320m2 Built Up Area: 600m2 Typology: Restaurant Team: Tushita Gandhi, Marcia Oliviera, Abhiruchi Anand, Noble George, Mona Doctor-Pingel Structure: Auro Service Consultants Contractor: Mohan Constructions Photo Credits: Georgio Cottage Restaurant was designed and built for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust. Located in Pondicherry, the restaurant enjoys a prime location on the street facing the main canal that once divided the French quarter and the Tamil quarter. The building is a reincarnation of an iconic restaurant – of the same name – that the Ashram has been running since the 1950’s. Its seating capacity is approximately 150 customers. A monolithic exposed concrete wall with a generous angular opening at its centre defines the entrance . A large steel sliding door , painted navy blue, gives a colourful character to the building when closed. The building uses a limited material palette of exposed concrete elements , black unpolished Cuddapah stone , and white plastered walls . The use of air-conditioning is isolated to the space where the sweets and savouries are displayed. The rest of the building is kept open, making use of natural air ventilation . Yellow & black bamboo with laterite & granite are the main elements in the landscape integrated throughout the building’s three courtyards . The single mature Neem tree on the site was consciously protected and became the starting point for the design, with a courtyard and around it. Interior Design:. All tables, chairs and display units were designed in keeping with the project’s overall spirit , the climate and, the comfort of the users in mind. All furniture is locally fabricated. NATURELLEMENT 2005 PROJECT INFORMATION Client: Martina Lundquist Year: 2002-2005 Location: Udyogam Complex, Industrial Zone, Auroville Built Up Area: 100m2 Typology: Restaurant Architect: Mona Doctor Pingel Structure: Mona Doctor-Pingel Contractor: Mohan Constructions Photo Credits: John Mandeen, Shiraz Panthaky Naturellement (jam and pickle production unit) is located within the Udyogam complex, which accommodates various small-scale food processing units and their staff/caretaker’s residences. Various experiments in structure , material and detailing done during the making of the staff residence in same complex were improvised and incorporated for the production units. The challenge lied in creating a harmonious working and living environment which dealt with the ecological impacts of small-scale industries in an effective way. The underlying theme was both that the ‘Polluter Pays ’ and the ‘Polluter Stays’ , ensuring maximum care of the whole site in all respects. A common architectural language which was developed during the making of staff residence was followed in production units too. Using concrete flat roofs with cantilevering overhangs , interspersed with Achikal brick and china mosaic clad vaults . BACK TO PROJECTS
