GARDEN OF THE UNEXPECTED 2022 PROJECT INFORMATION PROCESS On 2 June 2018, Matrimandir announced an international open design event inviting design proposals for the Garden of the Unexpected. 22 registrations were received. An Expert panel was formulated to review and furnish feedback on the designs. Stage 1 - Concept submission along with a basic estimate, feedback given by the expert panel based on 4 parameters: Concept & Aesthetics; Interactivity & engagement; Sustainability and Implementation & Practicality . In Stage 2, the participants were given one month to rework and submit their designs along with a 5 min slideshow/video of their proposal. Eventually 3 entries were shortlisted by the expert panel from 11 entries submitted. On 21st October 2018, an exhibition was held in Unity Pavilion, Auroville to display the works of all the eleven entries. A public panel consisting pre-registered Aurovilians from diverse backgrounds gathered over half a day, to select the winning entry from the 3 selected entries. All entries were kept anonymous. The team Unexpected Four was chosen to manifest the Garden of the Unexpected with detailed feedback given. As there were several compelling elements in the other two designs as per the community feedback, the organizers requested the winning entry to integrate some of them. Thus began Dreamweaving – a unique process which has been developed in Auroville based on co-creation. This involved several open discussions among the teams. Over the span of two months, the best aspects from the other two designs were integrated into the winning design, without it losing its essence. CONCEPT The Garden of the Unexpected has a dignified independence from the other gardens...it is a different being, a place with a twinkle in its eye…There are 4 gardens reflecting the spirit of place named BIRTH , ADOLESCENCE , YOUTHFULNESS , ETERNAL CHILD. IMPLEMENTATION Garden of the Unexpected is a team work of Mona Doctor-Pingel, Madhivanan Gnanvel, Joss Brooks and Andreas Bickford (architect based in Australia). This is one of the biggest areas for landscape in the Matrimandir oval complex comprising 2 acres, separated in to four different segments by footpaths. The execution of the gardens work was started on 21st February 2019 with a gathering of Aurovillians and planting of the first 12 plumeria bushes in the fourth segment of the Garden of Eternal child abutting the West Axis of Matrimandir. Garden of the Adolescence , was the first to be implemented and got completed on 21st November 2019 , It was inaugurated with children of Auroville planting some small seasonal flowering plants. The Garden of Birth was inaugurated on the 15th August 2020 quietly due to COVID 19. Garden of Youthfulness & Garden of the Eternal child are currently under construction. This project received the HUDCO Special Mention certificate in the Landscape Planning and Design Category, 2020. POSTCARDS AND STICKERS As an initiative to contribute towards Auroville’s land campaign and create awareness about the project simultaneously, the studio has developed a line of postcards and stickers showcasing the Garden of Unexpected. All proceeds from this set will go to securing land for Auroville, and sold under the initiative, “Art for Land”. The set includes 2 postcards and 6 stickers - All elements are from the Garden, such as the flora curated carefully and the fauna that visits the garden as a result, and other elements designed for the garden by the studio. Winner, Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Category: Women Architect in the Forefront Winner, Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Category: Mercantile Showroom Cottage Showroom was designed and built for the Udyog trust of Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It is located in Pondicherry, on a corner plot on the main canal street that once divided the French quarter and the Tamil quarter. The clients came to us to renovate a small existing showroom in this busy street. We encouraged the clients to relocate the building to a corner plot replacing the existing toilet blocks, to increase footfall and sales and also modernise the showroom. This building is an outlet of the Cottage Industries which has been running since 1949. It sells handmade incense sticks, candles, mats, body care and other handcrafted items. As the name suggests, they try to maintain a natural ambience and simple style of working , avoiding as far as possible an industrialized approach to manufacturing. They utilize recycled materials, integrate nature-friendly methods and are known for their signature packing incense sticks in tracing paper since decades. The project was conceived to be a modern establishment yet retaining the old world charm within an urban context. The exposed RCC structure with mud plastered walls creates a sense of charm. The building has two perpendicular walls in glass facing both the streets, which turns the entire showroom ino a display . The vertical steel shutters are designes in continuity with the facade cottage restaurant on the same street. DYNAMIC SHUTTERS: They have become the USP of this project. They are designed using a counter weight system and are easily operable by a single person. They filter the light entering the building creating different patterns on the walls throughout the day. They provide visibility and security during day and night for the double storey glass facade while also adding to the overall aesthetic value of the building. The play of the shutters changing during the night, day and lunch time (3 hours) add to the charm of its welcoming street, facade. All the fixtures and facade elements are made by local fabricators in Auroville workshops, requiring a lot of innovation and adaptation without using highly industrialized methods . The entire ensemble of glass facade with Munni blue color mild steel shutters enhances the modern element in the building. The corner of the plot is kept free making a smooth gesture to the corner of the two busy roads which acts as a pause point before entering the showroom. The two storey structure responds better to the existing density of the street junction with a corner office space on the first floor overlooking the main cross roads. BACK TO PROJECTS

Every room at Temple Tree Resort has been named after the significance of a flower , assigned by The Mother and has a hand painted entrance signage, a wall mural and a ceramic art that captures the beauty of each flower, carrying a silent message. While the eyes and the mind ponder the details, the heart is filled with the beauty that each flower brings to us enhancing the experience at Temple tree retreat even further. AUROVILLE CREMATORIUM (unbuilt) 2018 PROJECT INFORMATION The Auroville Farewell Team approached Studio Naqshbandi in 2016 for a new Crematorium design since the present one built about 12 years ago had a structural collapse of its metal frame. Although a beautifully simple and low-cost design, rain was pouring in from the top opening and the maintenance of its eco-friendly thatch roof was proving expensive. BRIEF: The Brief stated enlargement of the existing crematorium to accommodate greater number of attendees, better smoke extraction, protection from sun and rain for people to sit as well as easy access for the ingredients for the process of preparing the body. Rituals of flowers, incense, reading of poetry or favourite music of the departed soul is a common practice and needed to be considered in the design. The long term vision of the project was to create other facilities such as a caretaker house, a proper fence, landscaping and parking etc, on the 4 acre plot which also includes the burial grounds. (The Auroville Farewell Team follows an efficient local technology of creating afresh a new hearth in bricks with cavities for minimum use of wood, on which the deceased body is laid and encased in a layer of mud slurry, cowdung cakes and the ceremonial ghee. This allows for the body to burn slowly and fully over 14-15 hours. However there is more smoke for a longer time with such a process.) DESIGN : The design process began with the question: how does one manifest the metaphysical concept of going from one plane of consciousness to another ? Every Aurovilian is a potential client who is missing! The crematorium is a symbol of the connection between life and death , expressed in the overall design as a sculpture of liberation rising upwards. The form exemplifies emergence from the earth, channelling the soul towards the sky in an aspiration to the higher realms of Being . Engineer Manjunath reinforced the envisioned forms structurally through various conceptual iterations. All these were critically followed up with a design-material-cost analysis . The design of the Copper Sheet cladding was done in a way that there is minimum wastage by a well thought-out pattern which was developed in consultation with Roof craftsman Jean Marc from Auroville. Auroville Architects Monograph Series PIERO & GLORIA CICIONESI Authored by Mona Doctor-Pingel 2018 The Auroville Architects Monograph Series documents the pioneering work of the architects whose vision shaped Auroville, a unique international township in southeastern India. This monograph, the second in the series, is a comprehensive record of the work of Piero and Gloria Cicionesi, whose architectural legacy translates Auroville's philosophy of community living into built form. In 1968, plunged upon arrival into designing buildings on a barren red plateau, their deep engagement with the philosophy of Auroville resulted in the construction of several communal living spaces, with a spatial sense that is simple, modern and timeless. The Matrimandir, the spiritual heart of Auroville, was built and executed by Piero. Completed in 1992, it shows his mathematical genius and his sense of perfection and material detailing, sharpened in the democratic, collective milieu of Auroville. Gloria's projects such as the residential and community living spaces she designed, display her concerns about the comfort and security of an ageing population, as well as her willingness to experiment with newer, more sustainable materials. This publication brings together essays, drawings and photographs to demonstrate the elegant legacy of Piero and Gloria Cicionesi, for whom architecture was not only a search for beauty but also had a deeper social aspiration. Auroville Architects Monograph Series POPPO PINGEL Authored by Mona Doctor-Pingel Forward by Balkrishna V. Doshi 2012 Poppo (Reinhold Egbert) Pingel, born 1942, in Westphalia, Germany, has been working and living in Auroville, South India, since 1970. This unique International Township founded in 1968 based on the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo is a source of inspiration to many architects around the world. This first major monograph of Poppo's work spans his career to date, the influences that formed him and continue to do so, as well as his contribution to Auroville. Highly personal in his approach, his architecture challenges the senses with its rustic quality while responding to the climate, landscape and culture of the place. The monograph provides a bio-sketch of the architect and profiles select projects. Personal perspectives from former students and associates give insight into the multiple layers that define his characteristic architecture.
